Context

Acquisition gets all the dashboards. Retention rarely does. Repeat-purchase behaviour is one of the cleanest signals of product-market fit for transactional businesses, and it's measurable from day one.

Approach

  • Cohort tables defined in BigQuery, with first purchase month as the cohort key and subsequent purchases as the signal.
  • Repeat rate, time-to-second-purchase, and cohort revenue curves wired into a single Looker Studio view.
  • Written as a guide so other analysts can adapt the SQL to their own schema.

Outcome

A practical retention monitoring template that ships in an afternoon and answers the questions every founder eventually asks.
